The End Of Eat Smart!

Last week I was informed that our local health unit the HKPR Health Unit was discontinuing its support for Eat Smart citing lack of funding from the province of Ontario. The program was created to recognize restaurants that offered a smoke free, healthy food choices environment. The Woodlawn Inn was a recipient since the program launched in Northumberland about eight years ago. We will continue to offer our guests low-fat, reduced-calorie delicious menu options like we have in the past an we welcome the return of Eat Smart or any other program with similar objectives.

A new Northumberland farmgate guide

This morning I attended the launch of Northumberland County's new farm guide book. Local farmers, restaurateurs, and representatives from local government met at Cobourg's Northside restaurant. This year the guide also features area restaurants that use Northumberland products on their menus. It was great to reconnect with some of our favorite local farmers, producers and I also meet with some new faces in agriculture as well. If you would like to get your hands on a copy of the guide please get in touch with Northumberland County Economic Development & Tourism, 555 Courthouse Road, Cobourg, ON K9A 5J6, Tel: (905) 372-0144

The Woodlawn Inn recognized by HKPR's Eat Smart Program

We have won the eat smart award again this year! Eat Smart! is Ontario’s Healthy Restaurant Program www.eatsmart.web.net which recognizes smoke-free restaurants for achievement of high standards in safe food handling and nutrition. Restaurants in Northumberland County have been invited to participate annually since the year 2001 and the program has grown consistently since that time. Winners are announced in May, and a promotional campaign follows. Activities include advertisements in local papers, radio and phone books, visibility at community events, and distribution of posters and dining guides throughout the county.

Taste Northumberland, A new dining room feature

Over the past few years, farmers, and food producers in Northumberland County have organized themselves to create local awareness of where they are and what they produce. Last year, they put out an excellent guide called the Proudly Northumberland Farm Gate Guide.

If you want a copy for yourself go http://www.northumberlandcounty.ca/ag_highspeed.asp After looking at the guide, we were very impressed with what we saw, and have decided to feature more local produce on our menu here at the Woodlawn. The selections of Taste Northumberland will change often.
